Oliver Coomber Mrics’s Expertise Working at this prestigious and highly regarded Independent School on the South coast in a newly created role to provide project and surveying assistance to the Estates Bursar during a period of capital investment at a sensitive 250 acre, Grade I listed building & Conservation Area. Responsible for enabling projects including feasibility appraisal, AutoCAD design, consultation with bursarial and academic departments, local authority, statutory consents, specification, tendering, engaging contractors, programming and project management. Significant projects included: •Planning and managing multiple construction and maintenance projects using Microsoft Project for 17 DLO members and 40 contractors for simultaneous projects. •Refurbishment and alteration of two large boarding houses, including creation of an additional 10 bed spaces increasing revenue. Renewal of all services, finishes and furniture. Rolling phased programme through an 8 week period. Value £200k. •Whole site IT fibre upgrade, managing three separate contractors to ensure completion of 600 linear metres of trenching in a 10 day period avoiding disruption to the school. Careful planning with consultant Arboriculturalists and local authority departments with consideration of site wide Tree Preservation Orders within a nationally recognised arboretum £90k. •Refurbishment and alteration of multiple changing areas, all M&E upgraded, sanitary facilities renewed to modern standards and associated groundworks £130k. •Classroom refurbishments including complete strip and renewal of M&E and IT services, reorientation, new finishes and furniture £175k. •Planning and building control for the relocation of a two storey temporary building £40k. •Responding, managing and co-ordination of insurance claim for flood damage to day house buildings during July floods of 2012. •Setting up of CDM policy, notifications to the HSE and general health and safety management.Industrial placement for third year of University, working for large multi-disciplined consultancy in Nottingham in Partnership with a Local Authority. Projects mainly consisted of extension and refurbishment works in primary and secondary schools. My responsibilities included, full site measure and survey, production of AutoCAD drawings, completion of statutory obligations including consulting with relevant parties to achieve the required outcome, full tender production including works specifications, construction drawings and contracts; on-site management of projects including regular site visits to document progress against construction programmes, chairing of pre-start, progress and snagging meetings with production of minutes for distribution among the relevant parties. The initial contract of 12 months was extended until I returned to University. Projects ranged from £25k to £250k.Working initially for this large interior contractor as a site joiner at a Grade II listed residential property conversion, I was offered a position in their factory producing high specification internal joinery fittings for 4 and 5 star hotels in London. Quick progression through the company resulted in promotion to the position of Buyer. Working on projects ranging from £35k to £6.5m including a Hilton Hotel development in the Docklands, main responsibilities included: preparation of sub-contractor packages for competitive tender, cost negotiation with sub-contractor parties to ensure profit margin maximisation without compromising quality, purchasing of all other construction material: bespoke metalwork, tiles from Italy, materials and high value fixtures and fittings. A joinery background has provided a sound knowledge of construction techniques and enhanced problem solving abilities while purchasing construction goods has given a well rounded knowledge of budgeting costs, materials and negotiation skills.
